The assassination of the newly appointed mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos Catalán, has shocked the city and the entire country. In a violent incident on Sunday, October 6, Arcos was found decapitated inside a vehicle, with his head on the roof. The event has left society in a state of fear and concern, as well as raising questions about public safety and the influence of organized crime in regional politics.
The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, has strongly condemned the assassination and announced that the state prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations to clarify the facts and arrest those responsible. However, this tragic event occurred just three days after the assassination of the new municipal government secretary, Francisco Tapia, who was also the victim of an armed attack.
Arcos’ death has generated strong reactions from his party, the PRD, and its president, Jesús Zambrano, who has pointed out that this incident is a clear demonstration of the lack of governability in the state of Guerrero, which seems to be in the hands of criminals.
Guerrero has become one of the most dangerous states for political aspirants and public officials, as well as for journalists. This alarming situation is an urgent call for the government to effectively address the problem of insecurity, political violence, and organized crime in Mexico.
