The death of Keenan Anderson, a 31-year-old Black English teacher, has sparked outrage in Los Angeles after his family revealed that he died in police custody following a car crash. Anderson is also the cousin of a BLM founder:
According to Anderson’s family, the incident began when Anderson was involved in a potential hit-and-run. The AP published that he was identified as the potential suspect in their coverage of the incident; Anderson raised a knife over his head after evading police officials. Unfortunately, the incident ended with Anderson suffering from cardiac arrest.
When police arrived on the scene, Anderson’s family says that the officers tased and tackled him, causing him to suffer a fatal cardiac arrest. Anderson was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In the photo above, the LAPD used a taser that caused his tragic cardiac arrest.
he Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has not yet released any information about the incident, but Anderson’s family is demanding answers. “We want to know why the police felt the need to use such excessive force on a man who was simply involved in a minor car accident,” said Anderson’s sister, Tanya Anderson. “Keenan was a beloved teacher and a kind, gentle soul. He did not deserve to die in this way.” The incident has sparked outrage in the city,particulalry, among with many calling for an investigation into the LAPD’s use of force.
According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, the LAPD has killed more than 170 people since 2013, with Black victims being 4.4 times more likely to be killed than white victims. “This is yet another example of the systemic racism and police brutality that Black people face in this country,” said Anderson’s brother, Marcus Anderson. “We will not rest until justice is served for Keenan and all of the other victims of police violence.”
