An intense search and rescue operation off the coast of Sicily ended with the sad news of the death of tech tycoon Mike Lynch. The British businessman was aboard his luxury yacht Bayesian, which sank in a mysterious and tragic accident in the early hours of Monday, August 19.
Despite the recovery of five bodies, including Lynch, Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife and the tycoon’s lawyer along with his wife. The search continues as Lynch’s daughter Hannah, 18, has yet to be found.
What happened the night of the tragedy?
The tragic night Lynch’s yacht sank remains a mystery, everyone was celebrating Lynch’s recent victory in a fraud trial related to the sale of his company to Hewlett Packard for 10 billion euros. The joy and festive atmosphere was interrupted by a sudden storm that rammed the vessel.
Within minutes, panic gripped everyone on board as the situation on the yacht became chaotic because it began to sink so fast that they did not have time to react. Many of the passengers were still asleep and were awakened by the hustle and bustle on deck. A sudden and intense storm had caused the yacht to sink to a depth of 50 meters.
Mystery continues
Despite the efforts of the dive teams, the hazardous conditions and the depth of the yacht made it difficult to recover the bodies. Divers could only stay underwater for a maximum of 8 minutes before having to return to the surface. This time, they were unable to avoid tragedy.
As authorities continue their investigation into the incident, they are still searching for Lynch’s missing daughter. The last moments before the shipwreck have not yet been revealed and the true motive behind this tragic event remains a mystery.
