Eddie Hearn, the promoter behind Matchroom Boxing, believes that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez must put on a convincing performance against John Ryder on May 6 at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, in order to gain the confidence needed for a potential rematch with Dmitry Bivol.
Canelo Alvarez is set to put his four 168-pound world titles on the line for the fight against Ryder. Hearn believes that a knockout victory could give Alvarez the confidence he needs to face a rematch with Bivol in September. However, Hearn doesn’t believe that a second fight with a clear disadvantage to the Mexican makes sense.
“If he comes out in the ring and he looks great against Ryder, then he’ll be confident for the Bivol fight. Canelo is firm, he could tell him and Eddie Reynoso that it is a bad idea (to face the Russian). ‘You already fought him at 175lbs and he won quite comfortably’, but they will just tell me to shut up and make the fight,” said Hearn.
Canelo’s return to his homeland is sure to bring excitement to boxing fans around the world. It is set to be a highly competitive match between two of the top fighters in the sport.
