Colombia Strengthens Cooperation with the US for the Security of President Petro

Threats to the President

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has received support from the United States government amid growing concerns of an alleged assassination plot against him. The Colombian Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the matter, and the country’s Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo has announced strengthened cooperation with the US to ensure the president’s safety. Petro has publicly stated that there is a plan to assassinate him and said that the plan of these criminals includes filling dump trucks with explosives and blowing them up while he is on the move.

Petro is currently in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly

Petro’s participation in the upcoming UN General Assembly will be crucial for Colombia, as he is expected to address important issues such as energy transition, global warming and the protection of the Amazon rainforest. With the Amazon being a vital part of the global ecosystem, Petro’s voice will be essential to highlight the urgency of preserving it.

During his visit to the US, Petro also met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss proposals on climate change and the conservation of the Amazon. He highlighted his upcoming participation in the Cop16 and the G20, where he plans to present the “debt for climate” initiative. This initiative aims to address the issue of climate change by incentivizing countries to reduce their carbon emissions through debt relief.
