Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel, will appear for the first time tomorrow before the Eastern District Court of Brooklyn, New York, according to a judicial document released by the prosecution.
“El Mayo” has been detained in the United States since July 25, after being arrested at a private airport in New Mexico. It has been reported that his transfer from Texas was ordered so he can be present to hear the charges against him.
This information was revealed through a letter addressed to Judge Brian Cogan and shared by journalist Keegan Hamilton. In the letter, U.S. prosecutors requested that the drug lord remain in custody.
“No condition or combination of conditions of release can ensure the safety of the public or the defendant’s appearance at trial, and the government respectfully submits that, therefore, the Court should issue a permanent detention order against ‘El Mayo,'” the document states.
The letter also outlines the charges against Zambada, saying, “The defendant has dedicated his efforts for decades to growing, expanding, and increasing the power of the Cartel (…) since his associate, ‘El Chapo,’ was captured.”
It’s worth noting that Texas authorities had scheduled a hearing for the kingpin, which was set to take place this past Monday at 1:00 p.m. However, it was canceled “until further notice from the court.”
