Colombia once again witnessed a femicide that has shocked the entire country. Jeanneth Adriana Miranda Penagos, a 47-year-old mother, was murdered by her ex-partner in her own home located in the locality of Rafael Uribe, south of the city of Bogota. Her body was found lifeless and with multiple stab wounds, a sad end for a woman who was celebrating her birthday in the company of friends and family.
The most outrageous aspect of this case is that the victim had been threatened before. According to her family, Jeanneth lived in constant fear of being assaulted by her ex-partner, so she had a protective measure for her safety. However, this was not enough to prevent her tragic fate. The feminicide has already been identified by the authorities and they are doing everything possible to find him.
How did it happen?
On Sunday, July 1, Janneth was celebrating her birthday with friends and family but her ex-partner asked her to go home to continue celebrating. Hours later, her family, concerned that the woman had stopped answering her calls and messages, went in search of her. However, when they arrived at her apartment they found her lifeless in the kitchen with several wounds on her body.
The data from the Ombudsman’s Office are alarming. Between January and May of this year, 47 femicides and 144 cases of attempted femicides have been registered in Colombia. Unfortunately, this is not a situation exclusive to this country; throughout Latin America women are suffering the onslaught of machismo and gender violence.
