Lebanon has been rocked by a sudden outbreak of violence on Tuesday, when dozens of Hezbollah members were injured in a mysterious explosion of their pagers. The incident, which occurred in the Hezbollah-controlled area of Dahiyeh, has raised questions and concerns about security in the country.
The pagers were distributed amongst the entire civilian population and were widely used in medical contexts. The attack either involved lacing of explosives on the devices or malware that caused the battery to overheat. The resulting explosions victimized women and children as well as Hezbollah militants Lebanon’s Ministry of Health has warned citizens to get rid of their pagers and hospitals to be on high alert. Emergency medical teams have been mobilized to treat the many wounded.

Since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, the possibility of Israeli intervention has been raised, with suspicions that equipment may have been ‘hacked’ causing these explosions. However, so far no evidence has been presented to confirm this theory. However, a Bloomberg News article was published and assert that the attack was likely from Israel, and that the pagers were intercepted prior to their arrival into Lebanon.

Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad has said that it will take time to determine the exact number of casualties. He has also called on the community to donate blood to help those affected by the attacks.
While fear and uncertainty persist in Lebanon, it is clear that this sudden and coordinated attack on Hezbollah members’ pagers has added to the already tense situation in the region.
