Instagram users are angry about why their accounts are automatically following Donald Trump and JD Vance. Users, already peeved about the closeness between Zuckerberg and Trump, found themselves even more aggravated with the platform showing the latest post for JD Vance and Donald J Trump to them automatically.
However, the story appears to be that the users were following a vice presidential or presidential account. This would be the official account of the elected office, which is then monitored for cybersecurity and verification purposes by social media companies, like Instagram/Meta etc. In this case, users would likely have been following Kamala Harris, then as members of a list of people who followed the VP or President, they would be migrated to a new account associated with the current official.
As mentioned above, the major governmental offices with social media presence in the US are treated with extra care to prevent impersonation and allow for a continuous number of observers to access the person in charge of that particular office.
While this is mostly innocuous, the experience was certainly jarring for people already upset at the new administration.
