International Women’s Day Coverage

M8 Around The Globe
March 8 Marked With Massive Demonstrations Globally In Name of Women’s Rights & International Women’s Day.
Commentators reacted with events, new magazine launches and other relevant cultural events to observe the day commemorating significant activism to gain women’s limited rights – which remain under attack – in the global stage. LCN staff asked our followers what their 8m anthem was and many responded with varied range of enthusiastic answers around Vivir Quintana, Anita Tijoux and other renowned artists.
Throughout Mexico City, entrepreneurial and leadership events took place under the banner of ‘Decidas’ which kindly invited LCN’s very own Edith Loyola (@edith) to participate in their press coverage. On Tik Tok, LCN’s coverage has received outsized amount of attention with 100k + views and thousands of individual comments on Vivir Quintana’s performance at the Decididas event in CDMX.
Other 8M Related Events In Mexico City Kicked Off
Mutual aid amongst women has been a continued theme throughout M8 day events. Many have suggested that the first step is for women to read one another’s work so as to enhance one another’s collective understanding. Edith Loyola’s interview with Pamela Cerdeira touched upon this point below.
Morraz 51 is a new magazine that has launched in Mexico City. In our interview with Pam Rosendo, one of the creators of MorraZ 51, an informational platform from Opinión 51, she tells us all about this new project designed for Generation Z. MorraZ 51 was born with the goal of addressing what truly matters: feminism, social justice, human rights, and topics that are often left out of traditional media. With a fresh, unfiltered, and direct approach, this platform aims to give visibility to young feminist voices, creating a space for reflection and action.
LCN’s Colombia correspondent and videographer Laura Valentina Pardo – #Latinaparda as her pen name for various film works – breaks down how the M8 events came to become part of the continuing efforts for gender equity and fairness. In this video, she highlights key moments, like labor rights and children’s exploitation, and how women over a century ago paved the way for a better future for all people.
Colombia Demonstrations; Mexico City Burns
LCN staff was also on scene for commemorative events around Colombia’s Cucha movement. People held pictures of women disappeared or murdered and abused. People denounced the still prevalent amount of assault and subjugation of women through physical and sexual violence.
The M8 protests tragically denoted how often femicide is not investigated and how this particular form of violence is done solely because of aggression towards women as opposed to circumstances not involving gender, like generalized crime.

Demonstrators rallied around the still present conflict of fragmented guerrilla movements and government presence (or lack thereof) in rural zones of Colombia. Thousands could be seen in different pockets of Bogota.

Mexico City for its part held widespread protests. Usually, these end at the city’s Zocalo where women rejected the current state of affairs and set fire to various barricades in a show of rage at the widespread disappearances of women and girls. Mexico has one of the highest impunity rates in the world. Over 90 percent of crimes lead to no arrests or convictions, women and young girls are often bearing the brunt of these actions on top of the generalized amount of crime that plagues various parts of the country.
