Second reporter murdered in Mexico in 24 hours
Once again, Mexico has been struck by the tragic loss of two journalists in just 24 hours. Paty Bunbury and Mauricio Cruz were the latest victims in a wave of violence targeting members of the media in the country.
Paty Bunbury, a well-known entertainment journalist in her home state of Colima, was gunned down in her own food business. The attack was sudden and brutal, as an unknown assailant stormed into her establishment and opened fire. Despite the efforts of state police, Bunbury could not be saved and became another casualty in Mexico’s dangerous environment for journalists.
On the same day, Mauricio Cruz Solís, founder of the Minuto x Minuto Michoacán portal, was also murdered minutes after a broadcast for his portal. Only 25 years old, Cruz had already made a name for himself in the media world, but his promising career was cut short by violence. He was reporting on a fire in the Tariácuri Market when he was gunned down, leaving behind a community in shock.
The violence against the media in Mexico has created a dangerous environment where journalists are not able to do their job without fear of retaliation. The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for an immediate and credible investigation into these murders. It is crucial for the Mexican authorities to take swift action in finding and prosecuting those responsible for these senseless acts of violence.
