The Latin music scene is once again ablaze with controversy as Karol G’s latest hit, “Si Antes te hubiera Conocido ,” faces accusations of plagiarism. The Colombian reggaeton star has been a frequent target of such accusations, on another occasion, Karol G was accused of plagiarism in her single titled ‘Contigo’, with the song ‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis. but this time the debate has reached a new level due to comparisons to Rosalia’s worldwide hit “Despechá”.
The alleged plagiarism is due to the fact that Karol G’s new song has a very similar rhythm and merengue base to Rosalía’s song 2022. However, these claims are disputable, as the two songs have different lyrics, musical notes, and themes. It is also worth noting that the merengue genre often employs similar rhythms and instrumentals, making it difficult to determine if a song is an original creation or a copy.
Interestingly, Rosalía has seemingly joined in on the debate, dropping subtle hints towards Karol G through her social media. Just three days before the release of “Si Antes te hubiera Conocido”, Rosalía made a post on Instagram where her song “Despechá” is playing in the background. In the photos of this post, Rosalía can be seen making a face of displeasure, fueling speculation of a possible “rivalry” between the two artists.

Many fans have rushed to defend Karol G, arguing that the merengue genre was not invented by Rosalía and that similar rhythms are common in this style of music. “A Spanish woman comes to fight for a Latin rhythm? Don’t fuck with me.”, “You succeeded with latin music and you want latinas not to make latin music? ridiculous!”, “No one has copied your rhythm, merengue is like that”. These were some of the comments in Rosalia’s post.
Despite the controversy, “Si Antes te hubiera Conocido” has received positive reviews and has made a great impression on fans. Once again, Karol G’s musical style and storytelling abilities have captivated audiences, solidifying her place in the Latin music scene.
