Reports indicate that it is only 5% contained, prompting mandatory evacuations as it threatens over 65,000 structures.
As far away as Riverside, California, residents of the region could see a pinked sky.
Simultaneously, the Airport Fire in Orange County also commands attention, having consumed over 10,000 acres. Shockingly, this fire was likely started during efforts to mitigate future fire risks. Evacuations along the Ortega Highway have been ordered as flames approach the Inland Empire.
Eyewitness accounts describe extreme weather conditions exacerbated by dry winds and high temperatures. The National Weather Service characterized these conditions as “exceptionally rare,” raising alarms for firefighters and residents alike. A Cal Fire plane, spotted scooping water from Lake Tahoe, exemplifies the urgent response to combat the flames.
Social media has been ablaze with images and videos of the devastation, capturing eerie scenes and even visible flames from space. The sheer scale of destruction has led some to liken California’s situation to apocalyptic scenarios, with smoke so thick it obscures mountains.
