In a whirlwind of controversy, ambition and innovation, Saudi Arabian sheikh Turki Alalshikh is back in the spotlight, with his sights set on revolutionizing the world of professional boxing far beyond Saudi Arabia’s borders. Alalshikh, who has often been embroiled in public feuds with Mexican boxing sensation Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, has sharply criticized Alvarez for what he considers exorbitant financial demands to fight boxing superstars David Benavidez and Terence Crawford, amounts totaling $200 million and $150 million, respectively.
Conflicting Interests
After a press conference Canelo gave, in which he said that if Turki wanted to do business with him, it had to be his way. Sheikh took to social media to issue a rebuttal, dismissing Alvarez’s demands as unrealistic, also pointing out that he was doing it out of fear of fighting David Benavidez or Terrence Crawford. “I knew he was wasting our time and making excuses with large amounts of money that can’t be paid.” “Besides, I’m not the one afraid to fight Benavidez or Crawford.”

The bold move is bolstered by its burgeoning relationship with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, a partnership that has the potential to bring high-profile fights to new global audiences.
The sheik’s disdain for what he perceives as “easy fights” that compromise boxing’s integrity underscores his mission to stage clashes that resonate with both fans and new audiences.
