In the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 26, the city of Medellin, Colombia, was rocked by a tragic accident on its iconic Metrocable system. At approximately 4:30 a.m., a cable car on line K became unhooked and fell to the ground, leaving 20 people injured and one dead.

The cable car leaving the “popular” station was full of citizens on their way to work. Images of what happened show a chaotic scene as emergency services rushed to the scene to provide aid and transport the injured to local medical centers. According to reports, 11 of the injured are in critical condition.

The Metrocable, which has been in operation since 2004, is a popular means of transportation for locals in Medellin. The cable car network consists of six commercial lines, spanning a total of 14.62 km. Its design, with intermediate stations connecting the city’s hilly neighborhoods, has made it a beloved and efficient mode of urban transportation.

While the authorities continue with the corresponding investigations, the K line service has been suspended due to the ongoing emergency. Necessary measures will continue to be taken to address the situation.
