August 19, 2023, Sicily – In a tragedy that has rocked the world of business and high society, British billionaire Mike Lynch often dubbed as the nation’s Bill Gates and several influential executives have been reported missing following the sinking of their yacht, the “Bayesian”, in Sicilian waters. The yacht was celebrating a party in honor of Lynch’s recent victory in a fraud trial related to the sale of his company to Hewlett Packard for 10 billion euros. The bizarre incident appears to have climaxed with the reported discovery of two bodies from the wreckage site by Italian divers.
The Last Celebration
The weekend was to be one of celebration and camaraderie. Among the distinguished guests were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley bank; the lawyer who had represented Lynch in the trial, accompanied by his wife; and several other well-known financiers. In total, 22 people, 10 of them crew members, boarded the luxury yacht. Apparently, the yacht, a staggering £30 million marvel, sank within minutes after being hit by a storm.
The Tragedy
It was in the early hours of Monday morning when, in a matter of minutes, the situation on the yacht “Bayesian” became chaotic. Most of the passengers, who were already asleep, awoke only to face rampant panic on deck.
A storm rammed the yacht, sinking it to a depth of 50 meters. Missing in the catastrophe were Mike Lynch, his daughter Hanna, Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, the lawyer and his wife, and three other passengers. So far only the body of one of the crew’s cooks has been found.
Rescue Operation
Search and rescue operations were launched immediately, but so far few signs of life have been found. Dive teams have reported seeing bodies inside the sunken yacht, but the dangerous conditions and the depth at which the yacht is located have made immediate recovery impossible.
The man behind the accident
Mike Lynch, a 59-year-old software entrepreneur, is a well-known figure in the business world. As the founder of software company Autonomy, Lynch sold his company to U.S. tech giant Hewlett Packard in 2011. Despite his accomplishments, Lynch’s career had been marred by legal problems. He had been charged with securities fraud and, if convicted, faced a 20-year prison sentence. However, Lynch was celebrating his triumph in the case on the night of the tragedy.
