Colombia’s streets remain paralyzed as truckers refuse to accept the government’s proposed solution to their ongoing strike. For days, cities and highways have been blocked by large trucks, making it almost impossible for citizens to go about their daily lives.
The main issue at stake is the government’s decision to increase diesel tariffs, a move that the truckers vehemently oppose. Truckers argue that they simply cannot bear the burden of this price increase, which would significantly affect their livelihoods.
However, the repercussions of this strike do not only affect the freight transport sector, but also extend to the lives of Colombians in general. The city of Bogotá has been one of the most affected, as its mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, estimates a daily loss of 30 billion pesos as a result of the blockage of important roads. In addition, there has been a 40% reduction in the supply of food at CorabastoS, the city’s main food distribution center, which could lead to an increase in the prices of basic products.

Intervention of the public forces
In response to this situation, the mayor of Bogotá has taken measures to restore order and mobility in the city. 1,200 agents and six drones have been deployed to lift the blockades and reopen the main transport routes. However, this intervention by the security forces is not without controversy, as abuses and violence have been denounced in its execution.

In short, the truckers’ strike in Colombia is having serious repercussions on the daily life of citizens, affecting not only cargo transportation, but also other sectors and food supply. Meanwhile, the government and the truckers continue in an impasse, without reaching a satisfactory solution for both parties. It is necessary to find a prompt resolution to this conflict in order to avoid further negative consequences for Colombian society.
