According to an article from El Colombiano and the singer’s own social media handle, there were reports suggesting Shakira had been hospitalized shortly before a scheduled concert in Peru, leading to the show’s cancellation. There is already some discussion about Medellin, Colombia dates being pushed outward but no specifics about further dates out being impacted. These were pushed back one week, with the potential of further dates being impacted.
Shakira has been on a 2 year long mission to revive her career. The star has essentially reinvented herself participating in every major genre and artist movement ever since her highly publicized breakup with European footballer Gerard Pique.
However, this has not been the first of recent hiccups in the concert circuit for Shakira. Last fall, the singer cited logistical issues and postponed a much anticipated United States series of tours.
The news caused considerable concern among fans and sparked various rumors about her health. In her official instagram page, the Barranquilla, Colombia artist mentioned that she had an abdominal irregularity which caused doctors to recommend cancellation of the Lima, Peru concert for today February 16.
While additional details on the exact reason for her reported hospitalization remained unclear at the time, media outlets and social networks were still abuzz with speculation about the rest of her concerts. Her current ‘Las Mujeres No Lloran’ concert is set to make stops in Peru, Colombia and Mexico, which usually proves a boon to local economies as well as for the artists profile.
Many fans took to social media to express support and well-wishes, awaiting an official statement from the singer or her representatives to clarify the situation. Shortly, prior to the arrival of Shakira in Peru, a legion of fans was present in the area. Some had set up encampments to await for their eventual (now cancelled) entry.
Refunds, Lost Hotels
While the cancellation of one date does not necessarily spell disaster for those hoping to attend locally, nearby or even international travelers may find themselves in a pickle. For instance, some visitors to the United States had hoped that the shows in November would carry on having booked tickets. The same could be said of Colombia, but an insistence from Shakira herself to attend the Barranquilla carnival dates cost original ticket holders the brunt of the change.
