Ricardo Lezama (7/19/2014) - Grillonautas reports that after the arrest of José Manuel Mireles, the town of Caleta de Campos in the state of Michoacán has been left unattended by federal authorities. The Self-Defense group was planning to organize local residents to assert authority over the strategic port of Lazáro Cárdeneas; loss of the port would reduce regional narco-traffickers capacity to export drugs and collect on extortion 'debts'.

In Michoacán, México despite the absence of federal authorities, men, women and children have set up barricades in an effort to defend themselves from narco-traffickers and Mexican marines. This grassroots effort comes in the midst of reports that Mexican marines are extorting civilians, while defending the interests of prominent regional narco-traffickers.
