House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries found himself at the center of controversy this week during a press session where he struggled to respond to questions regarding the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Multiple social media posts highlighted Jeffries’ apparent inability to address direct questions on these topics, labeling the situation a “crash-out” which does not translate well into other languages, but means that an individual enters into crisis mode. User @wajali criticized Jeffries, stating he “stammers & distracts when asked direct questions about Abolish ICE and cutting ties with AIPAC,” with an accompanying link to an article detailing the incident. Another user, @cinemava, noted Jeffries’ tendency to “stick to politicspeak,” expressing her frustration over his non-committal responses regarding ICE.
The backlash extended beyond individual criticisms. Amongst the Democratic base, there are many who like, “Democrats committed genocide,” and “Hakeem Jeffries refused to whip against ICE funding,” amplifying the sentiment of betrayal among some party members. A growing faction within the party, including influential elected officials, is demanding a more progressive approach to immigration reform.
In stark contrast to the criticisms, a group of mayors from major U.S. cities, including Portland and Boston, publicly supported Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s demands for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding amidst looming government shutdown threats.
Jeffries defended his position, asserting that “ICE needs to be dramatically reformed,” as he faced criticism during a visit in Connecticut where he was met by protesters representing various social justice groups.
The Democratic Party is as disconnected from it’s base as possible; the leadership so aligned with AIPAC grapples with issues of immigration reform and party direction. The internal conflict suggests a significant challenge ahead as vocal segments of the party continue to call for accountability and transformative change in response to ICE, CBP & Fascism in general.
