In a dramatic turn of events, Colombian Congresswoman Angela Vergara, known for her staunch support of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, is now facing the harsh realities of those policies firsthand. Vergara, a far-right political figure, publicly praised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids against undocumented immigrants. However, her position has seemingly shifted after her own son, Rafael Alfonso Vergara, was detained by ICE, reportedly held in “inhumane conditions” for over two weeks, despite his work permit and pending asylum application.

Often, the United States is lionized as a refuge for those sectors of Colombian society who want to practice or engage in more unhinged capitalism. Now, she has more in common with everyday Colombians within the US.
