The Government of Mexico has opened registration for the 2026 “Rita Cetina” Universal Basic Education Scholarship, aimed at elementary and middle school students enrolled in public schools. Registration will remain open until March 19, 2026, according to announcements made by various sources on social media.
The scholarship is named after a Mexican teacher, who promoted women’s education in 19th-century Mexico, when educational opportunities for girls were very limited.
The Rita Cetina Scholarship, which provides financial support of 1,900 pesos every two months, seeks to ensure that no child or teenager drops out of school due to economic reasons. More than 12 million minors will benefit from this program, which aligns with the government’s efforts to reduce school dropout rates in the country, officials from the Ministry of Welfare reported.
The scholarship’s operating guidelines have been published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, where the required registration documents are also detailed. This time, the process will take place in two phases, beginning with fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students.
The program is an extension of previous government efforts, which according to reports will allocate more than one trillion pesos to social programs in 2026, including the Rita Cetina Scholarship.
Through these measures, the government aims to strengthen access to basic education and improve living conditions for thousands of families in Mexico.
