Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has made a resurgence in the public eye, urging solidarity with Cuba in light of the country’s continuing struggles. In recent remarks, he conveyed his emotional investment in Cuba’s situation, stating, “It hurts me that there are attempts to exterminate, for their ideals of freedom and sovereignty, our brother Cuban people.”
AMLO’s call for support includes a request for donations of food and medical supplies, citing a historical bond between Mexico and Cuba. His appeal has elicited mixed reactions, particularly from opposition figures who criticize the initiative. In response, current Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum backed AMLO’s call, labeling opposing comments as “mean-spirited” and reaffirming the need to aid the island nation.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the assistance to Cuba is a reflection of Mexico’s longstanding tradition of fraternity with the Caribbean nation. Furthermore, she announced her intention to personally contribute to the Cuban cause through a donation to the Humanidad con América Latina association. “We will continue to support the Cuban people,” she said, highlighting the critical circumstances currently facing Cuba.
The political ramifications of AMLO’s statements are notable, with some members of the opposition questioning the motivations behind his support for Cuba. In stark contrast, supporters, including Sheinbaum, view the initiative as a necessary expression of solidarity during turbulent times for Cuba.
This renewed focus on Cuba aligns with AMLO’s historical stance advocating for the Cuban revolution, and all of its gains. For many in Latin America, Cuba’s defiance of American imperialism inspires them to posture and reinforce their economic gains in ways that insulate them from the inherent risk of living in proximity to the U.S.
