It’s been ten years since the last of the Harry Potter movies, and it seemed that no film could ever dethrone the final film in the franchise as Warner Bros’ highest grossing movie. But that has all changed with the release of this summer’s Barbie Movie, which has shattered records and is now the studio’s highest grossing film ever.
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and produced by and starring Margot Robbie, has became the highest-grossing film of all time in Warner Bros. history, surpassing one of its biggest successes, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. After a successful run in the U.S. over the past week, the movie has grossed over $600 million in the U.S. alone and $1.342 billion in total box office worldwide.
Barbie’s incredible success can also be attributed to its strong international performance. The movie has raked in just over $750 million worldwide, with strong showings from its releases in China, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
The impressive numbers from Barbie have pushed the movie up to being the 13th highest-grossing film in the U.S. and the 17th highest-grossing film of all time. Not even pre-release expectations could have predicted the monumental success of Barbie, which is now setting the bar higher for future movies in the industry.
