Bay Area high schools are not prepared for the growing fentanyl crisis, with 36% of surveyed districts not training teachers and staff to recognize the signs of a fentanyl overdose and 27% not providing the lifesaving Narcan nasal spray.

Many schools have taken proactive measures in recent months to prepare for potential fentanyl overdoses, such as training staff on the administration of Narcan and providing family and faculty with awareness information.

But nine districts have taken action since December, but San Jose Unified, Pleasanton Unified, Fremont Unified, and South San Francisco Unified have yet to provide staff with Narcan or training on how to administer it.

Unfortunately, San Jose Unified has yet to join the Narcan training program and secure a supply of the drug, leaving Jeff Rosen, the District Attorney of Santa Clara County, to urge other school districts to take preemptive action before tragedy occurs.
