LAS VEGAS, Nevada – In front of a packed T-Mobile Arena, Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez once again proved why he is considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world. On Saturday night, Álvarez stepped into the ring against American Jermell Charlo and emerged victorious after a 12-round battle.
Álvarez, who holds titles in four different weight classes, showcased his superior skills and speed throughout the 12-round bout at the T-Mobile Arena. Charlo, who moved up two weight classes for the fight, struggled to keep up with the Mexican champion, who controlled the pace and landed powerful shots from the very first round.
While Charlo tried to use his reach advantage, Álvarez’s relentless pressure and precise counterpunching proved to be the deciding factor in the fight. The highlight of the night came in the seventh round when the Mexican landed a powerful straight right to Charlo’s chin, forcing the referee to give a protective count.
Despite Charlo’s efforts to turn the tide in the later rounds, Álvarez continued to dominate and remained in control until the final bell. The judges’ scorecards were unanimous, with all three declaring Álvarez as the winner with scores of 119-108, 119-108, and 118-109.
With this win, Álvarez solidified his status as the undisputed super middleweight champion, retaining all four belts from the World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO).
Ffor Álvarez, this victory is just another step in his journey towards greatness. After dominating the super middleweight division, he has his sights set on resting for the remainder of 2023 and returning to the ring in May 2024. And in true Canelo fashion, he aims to make a farewell fight at the legendary Azteca Stadium.
