Twitter, now known as X Corp announced Saturday that it will file a lawsuit against media watchdog group Media Matters for America and those who “have collaborated in this fraudulent attack” on the company.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court, alleges that Media Matters has been targeting X and its CEO, Elon Musk, in a smear campaign that has led to a mass exodus of advertisers from the platform.
It all started when liberal media watchdog group Media Matters for America revealed that corporate ads from the likes of IBM, Apple and Comcast were appearing alongside anti-Semitic content on the platform. This discovery prompted swift action from these companies, many of which announced a pause on their ads on X causing significant damage to its revenue and reputation.
X believes that Media Matters’ actions are not only damaging to its business but also a violation of its copyright. The company claims that by using screenshots of tweets without permission or proper credit, Media Matters has infringed on its intellectual property rights.
As the legal battle between X and Media Matters unfolds, the outcome could have significant implications for the future of online platforms and their responsibility for moderating content.
