In a groundbreaking decision, a judge in Colombia recently relied on the help of an AI-powered chatbot to adjudicate a case involving an autistic child’s right to health.

The case, which was heard in a court in Bogotá, centered around an autistic 13-year-old child from the city of Cartagena who was denied access to a specialized care facility. The child’s parents, who argued that the facility’s resources were essential for their son’s mental health, took the case to court.

The judge presiding over the case, Judge Fernando Cruz, heard the arguments of both parties and was faced with a difficult decision. Recognizing the complexity of the case, he enlisted the help of an AI-powered chatbot known as ChatGPT.

One of the questions that was generated to the robot was.
“Is autistic minor exonerated from paying moderator fees in his therapies?”, the judge asks and the application responds:
“Yes, that is correct. According to the regulations in Colombia, minors with a diagnosis of autism are exempt from paying moderation fees for their therapies”.

Using ChatGPT, Judge Cruz was able to review the case more thoroughly and make a more informed decision. He eventually ruled in favor of the child and his parents, granting them access to the specialized care facility.
