In the boxing world, there is no greater challenge than facing Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican superstar has dominated the sport and is undisputed world champion in the super middleweight division. But Jermall Charlo, the current WBC middleweight champion, is not afraid to take on the biggest names in the sport. In fact, he is actively seeking a fight with Canelo for his next bout given his recent victory over Jose Benavidez.
Charlo appeared to be struggling with his return back to middleweight. When he walked into the weigh-in, Charlo was at 166.3, but then simply chose to not make weight again. This, and the fact that the super middleweight has Canelo, David Benavidez and Caleb Plant, all marquee names, could have provided him with the motivation to attempt to fight at that higher weight.
After his recent victory over José Benavidez, Charlo set his sights on the ultimate goal – to avenge his twin brother Jermell’s loss to Canelo in October. But instead of waiting for the opportunity to come to him, Jermall is taking matters into his own hands and issuing a challenge to the unified and undisputed super middleweight champion.
“Pick Me”
During a presser after the fight, “Pick me” Charlo somewhat meekly declared. “I know people will say he already fought my twin brother, but I will be a completely different twin when I step into the ring with him. I’m not knocking what my brother did, he dared to be great by moving up two weight classes to fight Canelo.”
For Charlo, the chance to face off against Canelo represents the ultimate opportunity to make a statement and solidify his place among the top boxers in the world. And for Canelo, it would be another chance to prove why he is considered one of the greatest in the sport.
While both sides may have different motivations for this potential matchup, there is no denying the potential for an epic battle between two undefeated fighters. So will Canelo answer Charlo’s challenge and give fans the fight they are hoping for? Only time will tell.
