In a latest interview with FM, former National Security Advisor during the Trump administration, John Bolton, shared his views on the current situation in Venezuela. His opinion is quite skeptical of an alleged US offer to grant amnesty to Nicolás Maduro in exchange for his departure from power, as he considers that Maduro, a man who “stole the elections”, only responds to pressures and sanctions.
In his statements, Bolton criticized the policies of both Trump and Biden towards Venezuela, assuring that they have not been enough to generate a real change in the country. In addition, he lamented the current administration’s decision to lift restrictions against Maduro, stating that this has only strengthened his position in power. He also questioned the effectiveness of Biden’s efforts to influence other key countries in the region, such as Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, which he said have a close relationship with Maduro.
Bolton completely ruled out the possibility of a military intervention in Venezuela and suggested that the key to achieving change in the country lies in the opposition’s ability to generate divisions within the military forces. According to him, this could be a crucial step to weaken Maduro’s remaining support in the country.
For Bolton, the solution to the crisis in Venezuela does not lie in new amnesty offers or in dialogues with the opposition, but in a more forceful action by the Western hemisphere. In this sense, he emphasized the importance of imposing and strengthening sanctions against Maduro and his close circle, as the only way to pressure them and weaken their position. He also pointed out that countries such as Cuba, China and Russia continue to provide support to Maduro, so it is necessary to have a stronger and more united strategy to face this situation in Venezuela.
