On the eve of Pakistan’s highly anticipated parliamentary elections, the country was rocked by two bomb blasts that left at least 30 dead and more than 50 injured. The attacks targeted the campaign office of an independent candidate and an election campaign office of the ultra-conservative Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) party in the volatile province of Balochistan.
The first took place at the election office of the Jamiat Ulemaat Ulema-e-Islam party, killing 12 people and injuring 18. Meanwhile, the second blast at the office of independent candidate Asfand Yar Kakar resulted in the death of 18 people and left 23 injured.
Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, tensions rose following recent Iranian airstrikes in Balochistan province. The explosives were reportedly planted on a motorcycle.
With political tensions and security concerns at an all-time high, the upcoming elections will be a pivotal turning point for the country.
