The Brights Zoo in Tennessee is experiencing international attention over the recent birth of a rare solid-colored reticulated giraffe. The 1.8-meter-tall female calf was born on July 31, and records of a similar birth date back to Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo in the 1970s. Members of the Birmingham Zoo publicly confirmed that this calf is, indeed, the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe on the planet.
Upon her birth, the dedicated staff at the Brights Zoo took extra caution in inspecting the calf’s health. They made sure to run extra blood tests on her in case there were any underlying health concerns, and fortunately the results all came back positive. The calf is growing stronger by the day, and the zoo has since reached out to Save Giraffes Now and other organizations to garner support for their unique giraffe.
The staff of Brights Zoo is asking the public to help them give their new resident a special name that embodies all the love and attention she’s been receiving since her debut. Suggestions can be made on the Bright Zoo’s Facebook page, with the name to be announced when the zoo opens to visitors once again.
This giraffe’s uniqueness in the world has made her a symbol for the invaluable importance of maintaining animal diversity. To join in and help protect the species of giraffes living in the wild, consider making donations to Save Giraffes Now and other organizations.
