Germany has been shocked after a tragedy unfolded at a Jehovah’s Witness Center in Hamburg last Thursday. A gunman killed six people, including an unborn baby, before turning the gun on himself as police stormed the building.
The attacker, a 35-year-old German national and former member of the Jehovah’s Witness community, acted alone, according to Hamburg state prosecutor Andreas Grote. The authorities have pointed out that the rapid intervention of the police prevented the casualties from being even greater.
The tragedy has shocked all of Germany. Many are trying to understand how this tragedy could have happened. Leaders of the Jehovah’s Witness community have expressed deep condolences to their faithful affected by the attack.
Meanwhile, the country’s political leaders have expressed their support for the victims and their family, and have called for greater efforts to prevent gun violence. Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has stated that “the German government will work to do everything possible to prevent such acts of violence.”
