An attempted robbery of a Latam plane carrying US$32 million ended in tragedy at Santiago de Chile’s airport, when several armed criminals confronted security agents in a shootout that left one civil aeronautics agent and one criminal dead.
According to official sources, the incident took place on the tarmac of the air terminal, where some ten criminals arrived in three vehicles with the intention of robbing the plane, but were unable to get their hands on the loot.
The police have not been able to establish the origin of the criminals, but the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, stated that they had arrived at the runway aboard three vehicles, one of which was found burned in a peripheral area. “All the suspects have been pursued by the police, but for the moment there are no detainees,” the undersecretary explained. Undersecretary Monsalve also said that the authorities have opened an investigation to determine the origin of the attempted assault, as well as to locate and arrest those responsible.
