The United States Treasury Department has taken action against two members of Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), one ofthe most powerful gangs in the world.
Since its origin in Los Angeles, MS-13 has become a powerful presence in much of Central America, leading many people tosearch for security and improved prospects in other areas. Deported members simply set up shop in the area to extend their reach between Los Angeles and the small country.
The gang, formed by Salvadoran immigrants, is well known for their use of violence and intimidation in their criminal activities. The police have made numerous arrests and seized weapons, drugs, and cash in pursuit of their goal to reduce the presence of MS-13 in the United States.
Yulan Adonay Archaga Carias, a top-ranking leader of theorganization, is currently one of the FBI’s 10 most-wantedfugitives with a $5 million reward for his capture. Meanwhile, David Elias Campbell Licona is serving a prison term in Nicaragua after being charged with money laundering and plotting violent attacks alongside Carias.
These sanctions freeze the property and financial transactionsof both men in the US as part of the government’s initiative toreduce gang-related violence in Central America.
