Trump Boasts About Venezuelan “Drug Boat” Destroyed

In the midst of an announcement regarding Space Force Command moving to Huntsville, Trump also announced that a Venezuelan speed boat was intercepted by some US military group. In the midst of the announcement, few details were shared but also enough to glean that this was an escalation with Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro. The area has become rife with state sanctioned drug trafficking, but there is some semblance of normality in different spots of the economy.

Last Month’s 4000 Marine Deployment

A US Naval carrier filled with US Marines and other forward deployment related staff has begun sailing near Venezuelan waters since last month. The 4000 + contingent wouldn’t be enough to make a dent on Venezuela’s actual territory, but the gist of their deployment does seem to be to deter drug traffickers who have taken haven from Venezuelan officers who are entrepreneurial in their approach to maritime waters. Basically, with or without Maduro’s approval many Venezuelan officials take a cut of illicit activities to supplement their income.

Misleading Conference Statement

In the press conference, Trump relayed the issue but seemed to imply this was an attack on a criminal group. Presumably, the group involved is “Tren de Aragua”.
