The Dutch government has instituted restrictions on the export of its most sophisticated microchip technology, such as those created by ASML, to safeguard national security.
The move has been met with criticism from China, who regards it as a direct action against their right to develop.
The US, on the other hand, has praised the decision as a “victory” against Chinese tech hegemony.
The restrictions apply to Deep Ultra Violet (DUV) immersion lithography and deposition, and will require companies to apply for a licence before they can export them.
Furthermore, the US has requested that both the Netherlands and Japan establish comparable restrictions, while South Korea has voiced worries over the US’s policy concerning semiconductors.
