A tragic scene unfolded at Northside Hospital Medical in the Midtown area of Atlanta on Wednesday, as a gunman opened fire in a hospital waiting room, killing one woman and injuring four others.

The Atlanta Police Department identified the shooter as 24-year-old Deion Patterson and issued an “alert” notice for his arrest. The police warned that Patterson is considered dangerous and asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call 911. A reward of $10,000 has been offered for information leading to his arrest.

The victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta’s only Level 1 trauma center. Three of the victims are in critical condition, according to Dr. Robert Jansen, medical director of Grady Health System. A source within the Atlanta Police Department told CNN that the suspect and his mother had arrived at Northside Hospital Medical on Wednesday for a medical appointment. At one point, the man became agitated and started shooting. The suspect has a military background, the source said.

The tragic shooting has left the citizens of Atlanta shaken. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated, “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We are doing everything we can to apprehend the suspect as soon as possible so that justice can be served.”

The hospital shooting is the latest in a string of gun violence in the Atlanta area. In the past year, the city has seen a number of mass shootings, including at a federal courthouse and a children’s birthday party.  The Atlanta Police Department is urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of Deion Patterson to call 911.
