Barcelona, Spain – Brazilian player Dani Alves has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault. The former FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player has been behind bars for just over a year and will also serve five years probation and pay a fine of 150,000 euros.
The events that led to Alves’ sentencing took place on New Year’s Eve 2022, when the soccer star and his friends were partying at a nightclub in Barcelona. Alves, 40, maintained that the sexual relations were consensual, while the victim maintained her initial statement.
The sentence comes after a three-day trial and 15 days after the court’s decision. According to the Penal Code, Alves could have faced up to twelve years in prison for the sexual assault. The prosecutor had asked for nine years, while the private prosecution asked for the maximum penalty.
Dani Alves’ sentence is not the end of this legal saga. His defense team can still appeal to the Supreme Court if required. Until a final decision is made, the player will remain in custody, as he has been denied provisional release due to the high risk of absconding.
