Lightweight world title holder Devin Haney was arrested in Los Angeles and charged with felony possession of a concealed weapon. The 24-year-old boxer, who has a record of 30 wins and no losses, was released after posting $35,000 bail.
Haney was reportedly seen leaving Catch L.A. at around midnight when he was stopped by police for an unsafe lane change and failure to utilize a turn signal. When officers searched Haney’s vehicle, they found the weapon under the driver’s seat and subsequently detained Haney and his security. Since no one in the vehicle claimed ownership of the weapon, Haney was arrested and charged with a felony.
Though the charge carries a hefty punishment, Haney’s father and manager Bill Haney remains optimistic that the misunderstanding can be quickly resolved. “It is unfortunate that he was arrested with his armed security on leave,” he said, “but I am confident that things will work out.” Haney is set to appear in court on August 3.
Haney holds the WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF belts and is renowned for his undefeated record. However, due to the seriousness of the felony offense, questions remain as to whether this arrest could significantly affect his boxing career and reputation.
