Boxing fans got a real treat on Saturday when Mexican fighter Jaime Munguía put on a strong showing in his fight against Ukranian Sergiy Derevyanchenko at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Munguía—coming off a win against the 37-year-old Derevyanchenko to remain undefeated in 42 fights—has set his sights on a potential matchup with Saul “Canelo” Álvarez for the super middleweight belts.
Known as one of the key figures of current Mexican boxing, Munguía is ready to take on any super middleweight champion. While he recognizes the challenge in trying to defeat Álvarez—who currently holds the belts of four organizations, including the FIB, OMB, CMB and AMB—he’s confident that with enough training he can emerge as the victor in the ring.
This fight has been a topic of discussion among boxing circles, with Óscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions believing it to be “something inevitable”. So far Canelo has refused to fight against Mexican fighters, but if Munguía does get the green light he’ll certainly be ready to take him on.
“I’m very happy with the fight,” Munguía said about his recent win against Derevyanchenko. “We made some mistakes but we’re still here undefeated. We trained very hard in the gym, obviously it’s not the same in the gym as in the ring, but we’re always working hard, always trying to improve.”
Munguía may still have a few challenges ahead of him, but he’s confident that the future of Mexican boxing is strong and that he can help to make it even stronger in the months to come. Whether or not a fight against Canelo ever comes to fruition, there is no doubt that this will be a matchup to watch.
