Former SD police officer, Deputy Darnell Calhoun was shot as he served for the Riverside County Sheriff

In an unusual set of circumstances, the county of Riverside has suffered from two slain officers in a period of less than 2 weeks. The most recent incident took place in Lake Elsinore, California, which is a small town approximately two hours south of Beverly Hills, California.

The city of Lake Elsinore is known for it’s relaxed environment, but recently re-appointed a vocal Trump supporter as mayor, Natasha Jones, whose stance on gun control is expectedly laxed seems unable to navigate the complexities surrounding . The vast amount of rural space facilitates for individuals to take a relaxed approach to gun possession, drug use and increasingly violent crime. No one sees anything. No one says anything.

Recently, drone video of the shooting death of Riverside County Deputy Darnell Calhoun has been circulating in twitter. Calhoun was the first deputy to arrive at the scene following a call of “unknown trouble”, which was later determined to be a domestic violence call.

Deputy Calhoun died after being taken to the hospital in serious condition. The video, released by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, shows the shooting from the perspective of the drone. It shows the deputy arriving at the scene and exiting his vehicle, at which point he is shot by the suspect.

The suspect has been identified as Jesse Navarro, 42, as the man who shot and killed Deputy Darnell Calhoun in the Friday afternoon’s deadly encounter in Lake Elsinore, California.

The shooting is one of many that has reignited the debate over gun control in the United States, with many calling for stricter gun laws. Throughout the Twitter space: “This is why we need gun control,” said one Twitter user. “Another senseless shooting. When will it end?” said another. Others argued that gun control is not the answer. “Gun control is not the answer. This is why. Look at what happened in California. The deputy had a gun and he was still shot,” said one Twitter user.

A vigil was held to commemorate the slain deputy in Murrieta, CA. More will be reported as it is learned regarding memorial services to the fallen officer.
