It was a night of celebration and recognition for two of Latin music’s biggest stars at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Colombian singers Shakira and Karol G made history as they took home the award for Best Collaboration of the Year for their hit song “TQG”. The performance by the two stars was met with thunderous applause from the audience and viewers, and the two were visibly elated. Shakira spoke first and said, “I just want to say three things: long live Barranquilla, long live Medallo and long live Colombia.” Karol G followed up Shakira’s comments by exclaiming, “If collaborating with the legendary Shakira had been an impressive thing, to have an award with her is from another planet!”
The song “TQG” was released earlier this year and was part of Karol G’s album, “Mañana será bonito”. The album was a huge commercial success thanks to the participation of other artists from various genres.
But the night was not done with Shakira and Karol G just yet. Before their performance, the long-awaited moment arrived as Shakira made history by becoming the first Latina artist to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Shakira then blew the audience away with a rousing performance full of hits such as “Loba,” “Te Felicito,” and “Te Aviso Te Anuncio.” Following her performance, this year’s awards featured Shakira and Karol G in the nominations for Best Collaboration, Artist of the Year, and Best Latin Song.
This is not the first time Karol G has successfully taken home an award at the MTV Video Music Awards. Last year, she won the Best Collaboration award with Nicki Minaj for their song “Tusa”, as well as the Best Latin Song award for “China” with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin.
It was a momentous evening at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, as Shakira and Karol G wrote history with their win for Best Collaboration of the Year. With their winning track, not only did they provide a stellar collaboration, but demonstrated an inspiring musical connection between two Latin creators.
