The city of Bogotá has been shaken by another case of femicide. Last September 4, a woman disappeared after meeting with her ex-partner; days later her lifeless body was found near a pipe in an area known as Las Palmitas. On Thursday morning, Morales’ current partner identified her body at Medico Legal, with evidence of 14 stab wounds and signs of blunt force trauma.
Adriana Morales, a 29-year-old mother of one had left her Apartment in Fontibón to meet with her ex-boyfriend and father of her three-year-old daughter. She responded to a text message sent from her phone that night, but it was out of character and it seemed to suggest that she had gone against her will. The victim’s partner strongly believes that her ex-partner is responsible for her murder, since authorities have determined that the attack would have taken place very shortly after the meeting.
Security camera footage in Kennedy, where her body was found, has been a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation. However, the police have yet to find Morales’ ex-boyfriend and the second person that accompanied her to the rendezvous.
Morales’ death serves as a reminder of the devastating impact that violence against women can have, and the urgent need to ensure the safety of women everywhere and a reminder to victims of abuse to seek out support and help from family and authorities in order to protect themselves.
