Canelo Alvarez took to Instagram to announce his next bout with Jaime Munguia will take place on May 4th, 2024 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
What we see from the promotional literature is how ‘Canelo Promotions’ will promote and organise his 168lb defence against Jaime Munguia, a two division champion from Tijuana, Baja California. On the surface, Canelo appears to be leveraging PBC’s Amazon connection to make the bout a PPV. While many rumours have circulated about a possible fraught relationship, Canelo chose a new deal with the PBC in which he brought in Zanfer promotions, Golden Boy and Jaime Munguia in a series of moves that were unexpected and quite honestly dizzying for anyone who has followed the career of any major boxer.

However, the whipsawing effect was not quite the same likely for Canelo. From appearances, the boxer was always in control of his lifeblood, his career and promotional future. While relations with Matchroom seem to be cordial, PBC was on a real cliffhanger during the negotiations as the risk of Canelo leaving their business ties behind would jeapordize the connection with Amazon Prime.
On the road to this bout, Jaime Munguia is a top contender in the division, scoring a knockdown on Sergey Derivychenko as well as quick knockout of John Ryder, a feat Canelo was not able to accomplish.
