The PBC Drama & Rumor Mill Does Not Stop! With Canelo Gone, The Amazon Deal Looks Flimsy As PPV Stars Dwindle

One of the sadder events of 2023 involved the demise of the SHOWTIME boxing platform. However, much of the feeling around the boxing world was that the company hoarded belts and prevented competitive fights for their marquee boxers. Case in point, Caleb Plant delayed his bout with Canelo due to the negotiation that PBC insisted on exploring (but shelved) so as to maintain control over Canelo.

As we enter the second quarter of 2024, Matchroom, Goldenboy and Top Rank have all held major events across the world, but PBC has been noticeably absent due to the lack of financing for these events. For instance, their one confirmed event is a Pay Per View, which most fans have begun to consider these PPV’s as exorbitant.

Canelo Leaves PBC

One of the major events that have impacted PBC this year is the departure of Canelo prior to the completion of the 3-fight contract, which was quite lucrative even with just the initial fight for Canelo. The overall consensus is that due to marginal profits, PBC wanted to change the terms of not only the financial structure of the deal, but also the fighters in the queue to fight Canelo. Unfortunately, for PBC, the terms of the contract did not permit this abrupt change in the contract prompting both to part ways.

Now, as it stands, there is only one major PPV event for the PBC and that takes on March 30th. However, many are expressing interest and befuddlement to be frank at the lack of activity of many of PBC’s fighters.

PBC ON Amazon

As Netflix also explores live sports, Amazon appears to be rounding out its sports offerings as well by leaning on PBC for, at least, live sporting events such as Pay Per Views in Boxing. While there’s much rumor about their demise, PBC is indeed signed to Amazon and the jury is still out on whether that deal alone could save the fledgling entity. For boxing fans, a less partisan environment does help soothe these unproductive rivalries that actually block fights.

Even so, hopefully, PBC is able to carry on with one marquee fighter and their relatively large roster of prospects so as to maintain that faction of the boxing sport alive.
