On Sunday, military jets were scrambled to intercept a civilian aircraft whose pilot had become unresponsive as it flew near the Washington, DC area. The plane, a 12-seat Cessna Citation V, was on its way from Charlotte, NC to Family Friendly Airport in Manassas, VA, but it went astray and plunged into the George Washington National Forest in eastern Virginia. Four people were believed to be on board the plane when it crashed.

State and local authorities launched a ground and air search for the aircraft, and the US responded by activating two F-16 fighter jets in an attempt to contact the pilot. In a series of maneuvers, the jets attempted to draw the pilot’s attention by deploying flares and reducing altitude, but he remained unresponsive and the aircraft eventually crashed.

The response to the incident sparked confusion and concern among local residents as the sonic boom of the jets caused shockwaves throughout the Washington, DC area. Meanwhile, state authorities have suspended their search and are awaiting the release of information about the passengers on board the plane, though they have not yet commented on the cause of the tragedy.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since begun its investigation into the incident and will arrive at the crash site on Monday morning to document the scene and examine the wreckage. With the cause of the accident still a mystery, questions remain as to why the pilot was unresponsive and what, if anything, the US military response could have done to avert the disaster. Some also speculate there may have been a technical malfunction or medical episode that prevented the pilot from communicating with air traffic control.

The NTSB’s inquiry into the incident will likely provide clarity on the events leading up to the crash, as well as any implications stemming from the US military intervention. For now, though, the accident remains shrouded in mystery and confusion, and the loved ones of the four passengers who perished in the crash are left to mourn their losses.
