Geneva – The WHO held a press conference highlighting the current problem posed by the COVID-19 virus. Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, director of the WHO pandemic prevention and preparedness unit, pointed out that during the Olympic Games at least 40 positive cases have been recorded among athletes participating in the event. However, she explained that this should not be taken as a surprise as the virus is still actively circulating worldwide.
Kerkhove noted that many countries have experienced a resurgence of the virus in recent months, leading to an increase in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in several regions. In fact, data from the WHO sentinel surveillance system indicate a worrying trend, with a positivity rate of 10% globally and in Europe, reaching over 20%.
In addition, the expert mentioned the results of wastewater analyses, which reveal that the circulation of the COVID-19 virus could be up to 20 times higher than what is being officially reported. These findings demonstrate the importance of maintaining strict surveillance and continuing to implement public health measures, even during major international events such as the Olympic Games.
These data point to a stark reality: COVID-19 remains a global challenge that continues to adapt and spread. As nations grapple with fluctuating infection rates, the importance of maintaining surveillance and robust public health measures becomes increasingly critical.
