By Ricardo Lezama Peso Pluma – who once dreamed of being a footballer – is the hottest trending artist in the world. New interviews and fan announcements indicate that there is a new collaboration with an emerging artist, Jasiel Nuñez.
To be sure, Peso Pluma, the group and frontman, is not some ‘Latin’/Pop cutie pie act. They do heavy hits for heavy hitters, as well as more accessible corrido songs for general audiences. The flavor and success show a jaded country that has healed through music that depicts the reality of illicit day-to-day businesses clashing for access to western consumers.
Whose This Singular Mexican Taking Over Charts?
As such, technically, the name refers to an entire brand and group that is fronted by Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija. The origin of the artist is interesting and not uncommon for Mexico has historically been very open to all societies of immigrants. For instance, Hassan’s father is a Mexican Lebanese man, while his mother’s entire bloodline is linked to Jalisco and Badiraguato, Sinaloa. The group’s name, Peso Pluma, is actually a boxing reference. The group performed at a Jalisco event where Marco Antonio Barrera was present. The group was so lanky that they decided to nickname them and introduce them as ‘Peso Pluma’ (featherweight boxing fighting class).
Mexican Dominance
In Mexico, the Peso Pluma group is the most streamed, but notwithstanding, at just 23, the frontman, Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, has a great amount of runway to progress into different markets and genres, much like Fuerza Regida has in the past 4 years.

As of right now, the next big project is a joint EP with Jasiel Nuñez. The already distributed song, ‘Lagunas’, appears to be an attempt to branch out quickly into new genres that invoke the traditional Mexican guitar along with other harmonies and tempos.
