On Saturday, Indepaz reported the murder of social leader and teacher Hernán Enríquez Mora in a rural area of the municipality of Argelia, department of Cauca. This brings the total number of leaders killed in 2024 to 76.

The Cauca region of Colombia is filled with conflict. The US State Department has long emitted a warning on any kind of tourism there. Online, there are rumors that the local political class in Cauca is said to be living off cocaine exports, leading to calls for a cease-fire without laying down arms. Certain notorious criminals are said to be hiding in the same municipalities of Cauca where they perpetuate attacks against the populace.

The organization revealed that the incident apparently took place at an illegal checkpoint in the area known as Las Perlas crossing, after he left the township of Sinai, where he had participated in a community activity. Preliminary data attribute the act to an alleged dissident group of the FARC. Although suspicions fall on the FARC, fronts of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and local gangs operating under the jurisdiction of the Third Division of the Colombian Army are also active in the area.

Indepaz also acknowledged “the risk faced by individuals who are dedicated to the defense of Human Rights and social leadership, individually or collectively, from various fields or sectors in the country.” The Cauca Governor’s Office condemned the murder of the social leader, who was a native of the municipality of Suárez and served as the head of the educational center in the municipality of Argelia.
